Ludwigite is an iron mineral. It was first described in 1874 because of an appearance in
the Banat Mountains. It was named for Ernst Ludwig, an Austrain chemist. It typically occurs in magnesium-iron skarn. It has magnetic properties. But it is not metallic, even though it is considered a ore.
